This is a basic TV tuner/recorder for getting over-the-air broadcasts. Nothing special about it. I don’t think it even has DOLBY surround audio, but it has a fine HD picture and you can record using an external drive. In our area near Kennewick, WA, I can pick up about 30 off-air channels with an indoor antenna. If I put up an outdoor antenna, I could get about 50 channel, but most are not worth the effort. The box has an HDMI output and COMPONENT outputs for HD and NTCS standard video and audio. It’s cheap and works. This is the 3rd one of these I’ve purchased. Each one seems to last about 3 or 4 years, then for some reason, just stops working. Not a big deal in my mind for a $40 tuner that records.

I got this to watch public broadcasts in an old, LARGE plasma monitor. This did not disappoint, but there are a few things that need to be considered to determine whether this solution is for you…Likes: Easy to setup, decent HD resolution (with corresponding HD broadcasts), small enough to be inconspicuous.Dislikes: No volume controls, recording feature isn’t perfect (although it’s a plus to have).It’s a great option for people who aren’t willing to dump their old TVs (save the planet).

You have to point the remote directly at the unit or it won’t work. The response time is often much greater than expects, UI needs work. A lot of work. Actual recordings work well, but playback using the UI is hopeless, play back on another machine using OBS or your favorite. Haven’t figured out how to record a channel at a specific time yet, can only get what’s in the guide, and that’s one a days worth for me.

I do not have a smart tv and was tired of greedy Comcast raising prices every time I turn around. This item, coupled with the cheapest hdtv antenna is well worth the price. Easy to install, and the remote works great as well. Liked it so much I bought another set up for another tv.

If you are just looking to get Antenna TV channels to Tube TV then this is good.Do not buy this if you are looking because of the DVR capabilities. The user interface is horrible and seriously lacks functions. You can not delete channels. There is not a standard guide instead each channel just shows what is on and what is next. The advertisement says “record every episode of a series for you ten watch whenever you want” This is misleading. It only appears you can record live tv and somehow figure out how to go back and watch the video (I still haven’t figured out how to do this). There is no search feature. For example if you wanted to record every Jeopardy episode. You can only record it if it is currently playing but you cant search for Jeopardy and there isn’t a master guide that you can select future episodes. Only worth about half of what it list for.

UPDATED REVIEW: It seems after 3 attempts that recording will work for a day and then won’t work afterwards – meaning that you can record programs for one day and then anything you record after that won’t play. I’ve formatted the USB drive now twice and each time it works for 24 hours and – for some unknown reason – any recordings after that will not work and requires the USB drive to be reformatted to get any recordings to play again. I’ve contacted the seller who provided a software updated which did not resolve the problem. Thus, I lowered the rating on this device to 2 stars – as it does not work consistently.PREVIOUS REVIEW: The picture quality is great, the remote is adequate (rather small for all the buttons) and the on screen menu/user interface needs to be brought out of the 1990s. It is confusing and not user friendly, but once you get use to it you can get things to work – just takes a little training, which should not be necessary if someone were to make this a better user experience.

I bought this tuner to use as an off-air tuner to hook up to a projector. It works well for that. The channel scan picked up everything I was expecting plus a couple more channels, so the tuner sensitivity is quite good. The recording ability is a bonus for me; not something I was counting on. The features in that area are OK for a cheap tuner. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to do a programmed recording. The only way to start a recording is manually from the remote’s “record” button.There is a noticeable degradation in the picture when you play back a recording or activate the on-the-fly PVR mode (pausing live TV). It’s not terrible but things look a little chunkier. The files it generates are MPEG-2 transport streams (.mts) and can be easily converted to MP4’s using Handbrake or similar software.In my case I was specifically looking for a tuner that had an analog component output. It is not mentioned in the listing (other than the photo) or the manual, but it is there and it works at full resolution. The output is Y-Pb-Pr, not RGB, so if you’re hacking your way into an older projector connection using a VGA fanout cable, you’ll need to make sure you set the projector to Y-Pb-Pr mode.
