I will update this as I need to, but I waited nearly a month to make sure this unit didn’t turn out like the Pyle unit I had to return before buying this.So, thoughts after the first month -I came from a decent, but older (2005 or so) Yamaha receiver that eventually died on me. I figured a new unit wouldn’t sound too different or much better after the initial tweaking and setup outside of going from 5.1 to 7.1. I already had a decent 7.1 for my computer setup, so I knew what to expect in a general sense when getting this for my living room.Well, I was pleasantly surprised, even setup with the same speakers in a 5.1 configuration, the audio was noticeably better in every way. Not a “night and day, OMG SO much better” kind of way, but definitely noticeable to even my non-audiophile wife. Going from that 5.1 setup to 7.1 was also a nice step up, as one could assume, but I wanted to test 5.1 vs 5.1 as best I could first, and as stated, it excelled in that regard.Paired with a range of oddities for my speaker setup (my front speakers being some huge Peavey monitors lol) it works well, just don’t pair this with some dollar store cheapos, and you’ll be happy I am sure.TLDR – Is this a top tier unit that will impress the most snobbish of ears? No.Is it a heck of a step up from any sound bar/built in TV speaker/most older AVRs? Most definitely. You get more than what you pay for here. Even if it isn’t the top shelf unit we all want, it is way more than enough for the every man and good enough for an audiophile on a budget.Pros – value, overall sound quality is “more than enough”, sturdy, easy to setup.Cons – nothing fancy (as expected from this price range), sound quality isn’t the very best (also as expected). So… Really no major gripes.

Image preview is for Model DH770, product that this page is selling is for Model DH790 the major difference between the two is that the 770 has the option for all banana plug connections and the 790 only contains 4, the remaining connections are standard spring clip speaker wire retainers. The banana plug ports thread out so you can pin a wire inside meaning buying this receiver with the plugs is not necessary and you may be able to buy cheaper buying the receiver and wire individually.This receiver contains multiple options and useful information to supplement the placement of speakers to achieve dynamic sound, one item of major importance is that this device Requires speakers in the range of 6 ohms – 16 ohms, running a 4 ohm speaker for a long time or at loud volume can prematurely burn out the amp in this device. This product does not ship with speakers they are sold optionally and depending on the model may be quite pricey, as a recommendation I recommend Sony SSCS 6 ohm speakers to get started with they are made by the same manufacture as the receiver and are somewhat more affordably based than other options.

Setting up the speakers was a breeze, thanks to the automated speaker setup and the included microphone. The receiver seamlessly integrated with my speakers, ensuring an optimal audio experience.The eArc HDMI connection proved to be a valuable addition, particularly as I had also replaced my TV due to the lightning strike. With this feature, I was able to control both the TV and receiver using the same remote, simplifying my entertainment setup. The compatibility between the receiver and my new TV worked flawlessly, providing a hassle-free experience.When it comes to sound quality, the STR-DH790 delivers. The audio output is impressive, although it may be slightly limited in terms of sound effects. Had Sony products for years with my Dad working for them. Had several surround sound receivers but they left something to be desired sound wise. I switched over to Marantz ten years ago and was very happy with the sound. Unfortunately the Marantz gave out and I could not talk my wife into letting me spend the money again. This Sony was such a great deal, and reviews had all brands very close, I went for it. I have been very impressed. Setup was easy. The sound is tremendous both with movies and music. It is pretty straight forward as far as options go but that’s ok.

I’m not really sure how to rate this device because when it works, it sounds fantastic. This is where the problem lies. Starting from the beginning, it is overly complicated. At least it seems this way to me. I say this because when I first set it up, it seemed to work fine. It would turn off and on when I turned the TV off and on. Then I started having issues with it turning off when I turn the TV off but not coming on when I turn the TV on. Disappointing but really not a big deal. I’m not lazy so I’ll just turn on the unit after I turn the TV on. Simple right? Then it started not playing TV sound after turning the unit on. I would have to turn it off and on several times before it would kick in and start working. Now, it picks and chooses when the subwoofer works. And the times that the sub doesn’t play anything is 99% of the time! Then to top it off, if I’m in the middle of a stream and the sub isn’t working, I try swapping to another input and back to TV setting and it completely overrides my smart TV and shuts down all apps and goes to the unit settings that pop up on my TV screen. BAM! Now I have to reload my streaming app to see if the sub is going to work. I really dislike this unit. Sony tried to make it so smart that it more resembles a smart stubborn cat that won’t get off the counter only because it knows you don’t want it up there! This is not a cheap unit and I have always held Sony in a high regard but I’m warning you now… hope you get one of the good units like the people who wrote the good reviews!

I have purchased 2 of these receivers, if that does not tell you how much I love this receiver nothing will. If you are looking for mainly a music receiver, this is not for you. The only down side I can see is for new comers to HTS discovering everything this receiver has to offer. Electronic navigation is always a little difficult to start, but with a little research and patience you will master in no time. I recommend pairing with Kiplish speakers, 5.1 or 7.1. Highly recommend for HTS.

i’m sure this receiver is totally great and cool and awesome for a basic 7.2 hdmi only setup, but we needed RCA video/yellow inputs (as pictured in the advertised photo of the back of the unit) as well as the ability to output audio from AV inputs while outputting video from HDMI inputs, which most receivers nowadays have (the one we received does not).i’m exchanging and buying a different one with those features for the same price :) but for a 7.2 ch setup that doesn’t need those features this seems like a solid choice. as of march 2024 the photos are of the DH770, not DH790, so make sure to double check exactly what model you are buying & maybe cross reference with sony’s site before purchasing >:)

SONIDO – tenia el STRK880 (hace 10 año lo compre) y querÃa algo mas actualizado, el salto en sonido fue poco, pero obviamente al tener Atmos y DTSX sientes diferencia, realice pruebas desde Netflix y el Atmos es muy bueno, pero cuando ves una pelicula desde un BR es diferente, el sonido es mucho mejor, cumple con lo requerido asi que le doy 10/10, para una sala normal tendrás potencia y calidad de sonido, mi sala es de 3.5 x 3.5 metros pequeña, estoy muy contento con el sonidoPARLANTES – como tenia los parlantes del STRK880 no me vi en la necesidad de comprar, solamente compre el Woofer ya que estaba dañado, mis parlantes no dicen de cuantos watts son, solo dicen 6 ohm, asi que funcionaron bien, configuré mi STR con parlante small y suenan súper bien, probé con parlante Large y suena horrible, es porque los parlantes son pequeños 10/10 porque acepto mis parlantes viejosPRESENTACION – muy bonito, pero me hubiera gustado una mejor pantalla para ver mas información, pero es aceptable, te dice que audio estas recibiendo, 9/10NETFLIX, HBO, DISNEY – si detecta Atmos, pero el sonido viene comprimido, la calidad es buena pero no vamos a comparar si ves una pelÃcula en BR disc, es mucho mejor, debes revisar la configuración de tu TV, yo tengo un LG C1 y tiene varias configuraciones de salida de audio, debes colocarla en transferencia, si la pelÃcula es Atmos debes seleccionar en el mando del STR multichannel y si es DD+ debe seleccionar movie en el mando del STR y obtendrás la calidad óptima de sonidoDESEMPEÑO – algo no me gusto, estaba escuchando Spotify, suena bien la verdad, pero le aumente el volumen y luego sentà un olor a quemado, el STR no esta encerrado, esta al aire libre, sin cubiertas, el olor era fuerte a quemado, a tal grado que le baje y lo apague esperando que no se hubiera dañado, me dejo experiencia no volver a subirle el volumen, me asusto mucho, esta experiencia es muy NEGATIVACONFIGURACION – esta parte fue mala, tengo los parlantes ya instalados siguiendo las normal correctas en ubicación y alturas, cuando inicie el sonido viene flat, plano, sin configuración, me toco hacer varias configuraciones hasta llegar al sonido deseado, en el manual no te explican varias funciones del SRT, a tal grado que al principio me decepcione y querÃa devolverlo, pero luego encontré las funciones del viejo STRK880 y me familiarice, logre configurarlo correctamente y su sonido es el correcto, si te encuentras con este problema no te desmotives, sigue viendo revisando y jugando con su configuración, el STR viejo solo fue de conectarlo y listo parte muy NEGATIVA, tiene muchas funciones ocultas como ser distancia de parlarltes, tipo de parlante si es small o large, cantidad de ohmios, agudos y bajos de cada parlante, nivel de volumen individual de cada parlante, muchas configuraciones que para mi deben ser manuales pero no lo es, debe probar opcionesMENU – su menú es pobre, esperaba mas, aunque no tienes mucho que hacer, pero parece interface de calculadora jajajaj, esperaba mas interactivo y con imagenes de ejemplos, es un menu solo texto aburrido parte NEGATIVACONTROL REMOTO – sencillo, esperaba mÃnimo botones para subir y bajar el volumen de los bajos (graves), si quieres bajar al woofer debes entrar a configuraciones y es complicado, o bien levantarte de tu asiento y bajarle al parlante manualmente en su control de volumen incorporadoPlayStation 5 – tengo un PS5, si te detecta Atmos solamente para pelÃculas BR disc, debes hacer una pequeña configuración, en lo juegos te detecta Dolby Digital SOLAMENTE, si tienes un TV 120 hrz, debes conectar directamente al TV y no al STR, ya que no cuenta con puerto HDMI 120, solamente es de 60 hrz (punto negativo) aunque no lo veo necesario conectar tu PS5 al STR, yo esperaba un sonido 3D saliendo por un receiver pero no es asi, solamente tiene el viejo, basico y confiable Dolby Digitalespero sirvan mis comentarios para que puedas tomar la mejor decisión, lo compre por tema de estética y mejorar a Atmos, pero me encontré con el problema que solo con BR Disc lo obtengo, descargar pelÃculas MKV con estos formatos Atmos y DTSx no cualquier TV te los reconoce mi LG C1 me codifica a DD+, al dÃa de hoy sigo buscando opciones y estoy optando por comprar una grabadora de BR Disc o comprar pelÃculasdisfruta tu compra
